Exeter Chiefs have defeated Saracens at Sandy Park in a spectacular game in the Anglo Welsh Cup. The Chiefs put up a brilliant display to overcome Saracens 43-20. After Harlequins lost to Northampton Saints, Chiefs were expected to put up a spirited performance against the Saracens to earn a bonus point. Exeter Chiefs did not disappoint as they won the game.

The back to back runners up started the game very well with Tom O’Flaherty, Ollie Devoto, Moray Low and Jack Maunder all impressing in the first half of the tie. Saracens responded through Tom Whiteley, RotimiSegun and Max Malins but Exeter kept on scoring to push the margin wider. Despite a late Tom Lindsay try, Saracens still lost by a mile.

Devoto was clearly the star of the game. He was crucial to the success in the Aviva Premiership Rugby years back and in the game he showed similar level of brilliance. He missed a decent part of the season due to injury but he proved he has fully recovered with the sterling display against Saracens. He is expected to continue his fine form when the Aviva Premiership Rugby resumes.

Exeter are set to get a home tie in the next stage and get the advantage they need to clinch the title this term. From the get go against Saracens, it was obvious that they were keen on getting the bonus point. The way Maunder dived over to score a try confirmed the team’s high mental state.

“I am very proud of the group, it just shows the character we have, not just in the squad, but in the Anglo-Welsh group. The way we got the try at the end was outstanding, I am very proud,” Exeter coach Ricky Pellow said after the game.
